Getting started at Apex Truck Driving School

Getting started at Apex Truck Driving School is simple. Before enrollment, applicants should review the basic requirements below. Our admissions team can explain what applies to your program and help you complete the required paperwork.

Admission requirements

Minimum age requirement

Applicants must be at least 18 years old for California intrastate CDL training and at least 21 years old for interstate driving.

Valid driver's license

Applicants must have a current, valid driver's license from their state of residence at the time of enrollment.

Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)

CLP preparation/support is included in the 160-hour Class A and 120-hour Class B programs. Accelerated skills training students must already have a valid CLP before training begins.

DOT medical certificate

Students in accelerated skills training must have a valid DOT medical certificate. Other students may also need one, depending on the program and DMV/FMCSA requirements.

DOT, FMCSA, DMV, and ELDT compliance

Students must meet all applicable DOT, FMCSA, California DMV, and ELDT requirements for their selected program.

Drug and alcohol testing

Students in accelerated skills training must complete the required DOT drug test before behind-the-wheel training. Other testing requirements may apply by program.

English language proficiency

Students must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English well enough to follow safety instructions and CDL training requirements.

Identification and enrollment documents

Students must provide required identification, residency, permit, medical, and enrollment documents requested by the school.

Attendance, safety, and conduct policies

Students must follow school attendance, safety, and conduct policies during training.

Training length depends on the course selected. Class A Commercial Truck Driving is 160 hours and Class B is 120 hours, both including CLP preparation/support. Accelerated Behind-the-Wheel Skills is 80 hours and requires a valid CLP, DOT medical certificate, and required DOT drug test before training. Refresher Training is 40 hours.
